The
Girl Effect: The powerful social and economic change brought about when girls
have the opportunity to participate in their society.
WHY GIRLS?
Because when adolescent girls in the developing world have a chance, they can
be the most powerful force of change for themselves, their families,
communities and nations.
But while those 600 million girls are the most likely agents of change, they
are invisible to their societies and the world.
______________________________________________________________
Adolescent
girls are uniquely capable of raising the standard of living in the developing
world. Girls are the most likely agents of change, but they are often invisible
to their societies and to our media.
When everyone—girls, parents, teachers, executives, artists, hairdressers,
forest rangers, rock stars, presidents, investors, advertisers, skateboarders,
truckers, cowboys, organizations, chefs, teenagers—knows about The Girl Effect,
then real change can happen. This site is just the beginning. The end is
nothing less than ending poverty.
The Girl Effect is rooted in the work of the Nike Foundation , which has been
joined by the NoVo Foundation in a shared mission to
create opportunities for girls, and for the world. Other girl champions include
the UN Foundation, the International
Center for Research on Women, the Population Council, the Center
for Global Development and those who work for girls
everyday, in schools, villages, cities, offices, agencies, and governments.
