Senegal: Saving the Lives of Mothers and Babies

16 April 2008

WHO/Marie-Agnes Heine

Helène D. gave birth to her son Charles at a district health centre and is one of the lucky Senegalese women who have access to safe delivery.

In close cooperation with the WHO Department of Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS), the Government of Senegal has developed a roadmap to reduce the maternal and child mortality rates in the country. As a result, more trained staff have been recruited in district health centres in recent years and more pregnant women have gained access to essential obstetric care.

This photo story documents how a suburban health centre in Senegal is saving lives of mothers and babies. But, more needs to be done. Unless all mothers get access to skilled care before, during and after childbirth, Senegal will fail to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
