violence
is a compelling and
confronting read.
ABSTRACT
The book is now available worldwide through First
Person Publishers, Debut Publishing. Successfully launched in
Point Last Seen successfully sheds
more light on these complex questions:
(a)
Why
don’t women in abusive situations just leave?
(b)
What
is the answer to ‘The Big Why?’ Why me?
(c)
What
is the relationship between illegitimate shame and abuse?
(d)
What
is the relationship between animal abuse and domestic abuse?
This eye-opening book has a dual purpose
- it’s a self-help book for survivors of domestic violence AND a
ticket entry for professionals. This release is Book One of a two part series.
Australian author Ricky Hunter lowers her veil
of privacy to provide the reader a first-hand view of what it means to live
life after being abducted as a child, suffering domestic violence in her
marriage and coping with a mental illness.
Seen predominately as a first-person story and
written as self-help therapy to recover from the trauma of decades of denial,
this rich and substantive narrative is carefully crafted to walk the reader
through an intimate journey with the writer - who viewed the world through a
lens of self doubt, shame and denial.
Appalled to find globally that one-in-three
women suffer abuse and violence (UNIFEM) Ricky researched the topic of domestic violence and abuse to discover
some ‘recovery gems’ that she shares with her readers.
One-in-three-is one
too many
“From my research, it appeared to me that
women who suffer abuse share a common belief system and universal emotional
experience - the perpetrators displaying the same cluster of behaviours.
One-in-three-is one too many,” Ricky says. “There had to be
something I could do to not only help myself face past trauma, my symptoms of
post traumatic stress disorder, but to find some empowerment and control over
my life. I also wanted to take this option to speak out for women who do not
have the opportunity.”
Ricky
realised by writing her first-person story that survivors of abuse can
lead calmer and more mindful lives. Ricky says, “We can empower
ourselves and step up to the road to recovery by discharging the negative
feelings and emotions that often imprison us in our cage of despair.”
Drawing from her secular experience, her
professional life, single journeywoman Ricky Hunter developed her very
successful and lifesaving Project Plan to Empowerment document.
When used under strict medical supervision, the plan can be a valuable tool to
healing. Point
Last Seen is being used in the therapeutic
setting with health professionals and also being utilise in men’s counselling
groups with significant impact. The author now conducts workshops
for both survivors and professionals.

The book was first launched in Australia by
Queensland Governor Ms Bryce, who had this to say in her launch speech:
“Ricky, not only have your voice and strides saved your own precious life, they
have prised open the most sinister cervices of our society, demanded a hearing,
and worked ceaselessly on strategies and solutions for healing. I have the
deepest respect for what you have gained at immense personal cost and what you
now so generously share.”
Sadly, Ricky’s only son Jonty, died on the 18th
June 2007 at the age of 33 years. This overseas release is dedicated to his
memory. “His death will not be in vain,” says Ricky,
“Jonty’s story will be told in my workshops as a stark lesson on health
outcomes of abused children, even in the womb.”

Ricky Hunter has lived an intensely
difficult life involving childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence and mental
illness. Instead of seeing herself as a victim, she is standing tall and
choosing to use her experience as a way of helping others. A
true hero, indeed!
Susan Jeffers, Ph.D.
Author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway
Elizabeth Brett once reminded professionals
that to understand and describe the experiences of traumatised people, we must
stay close. To distance ourselves, to rely too heavily on theory without
the personal, is to diminish this ability. Ricky, with her telling of the
complex interplay of the past and present, of pain and achievement, of the
compelling drive to endure, invites us to come in close.
Faced with exhaustion and a sense that little
was real, but with a lingering faith in her self’s existence, Ricky searched
for what was long lost. Discoveries of self-knowledge exacted their dues
as the debts to soul-life were paid, and emotions and sensations long banished
again took up residence, sometimes with ferocity. Despite the unknown,
despite the burden of unpredictability, her project of “A time to heal” had the
strength of integrity and, with the support of those closest, the search
continued and each insight welcomed.
Beverly Raphael said that such stories can only
be told when survivors have drawn back from the abyss and are safe, when losses
can be accommodated, when a community can be concerned with justice and human
rights, and when therapists and others can hear. Ricky Hunter gives us
one such opportunity.

Point Last Seen….a road to recovery after
childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence offers the reader insight into the personal
healing journey of ONE woman who has experienced the complexities of child
abuse, mental illness and domestic violence. The book is both powerful
and confronting and provides a platform for the once silent voice amongst those
who have been abused. As a sexual assault worker, I have read the book
and utilised the book in practice - verbal feedback through my service has been
both positive and encouraging with survivors voicing their respect for Ricky
Hunter's personal strength to endure and conquer. This book is not only
for those who have been abused, but for those who are both humbled and
strengthened by the voice of others who have struggled through the complexities
of life. As a professional, I am in awe of Ricky Hunter's courage and her
choice to be a survivor.

Ricky you were right
when you said at the launch about the reader experiencing and seeing what you
went through. Ricky your book is a rich experience to read, and has substance
to it, and then it has your Plan and its framework as a real self-help tool, resources, lists etc. I hope the publicity
for the book overseas does highlight the fact that it is both a great read
about the experiences for a general audience, combined with a strong self help
element to give some readers real tools and somewhere to go from reading. And I
have to say I just love the title, and all the info about tracking in the
glossary that supports this theme. So again, I pay tribute to the
positive influence and skills of you Paulette to assist Ricky to find her
voice, and to produce it on the page, and for Ricky to have the guts to be so
honest, with the ability to express it in words. As I have said, your book is
such a rich experience to read. This is sent to you both with great
appreciation of you as wonderful human beings who make a difference, and who
plant seeds in people's lives for them to grow strong.

Point Last Seen is both a touching and true story of one
woman's experience through adversity and strongly depicts the strength of the
human spirit to survive. As a social worker who has experience in the areas of
mental illness, domestic violence and child abuse, I believe Ricky Hunter has
portrayed the difficulties that many women face in these areas. Not merely
another autobiography, this book integrates ideas and resources for those who
are, or have, struggled in similar areas. Alongside the support of a health
professional and support system in general, this book can provide an avenue for
discussion and resolution in one's own life. At times a confronting read, Point
Last Seen has the capacity to show those who struggle in these areas, they are
not to blame."
