BANGLADESH - GANG RAPE OF
GIRL & MOTHER; CALL FOR JUSTICE
23
May 2008,
The Hague, The Netherlands
URGENT APPEAL: Bangladesh: Christian minority girl (14) gang raped and killed
on 30 April 2008 at Kaligonj, Gazipur district. [UA-BA-23.05.2008]
Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) regrets to inform you about the gang rape of
a Christian minority girl (14) and her mother (34) by three men on the evening
of the 30 April 2008. Subsequently, the young girl unfortunately passed away
early the next morning in the hospital, and the police are still yet to arrest
the perpetrators.
CASE DETAILS:
On the evening of 30 April 2008, the three men entered the house of the victim
(14) and gang raped her along with her mother (34). After the perpetrators fled
the scene, the girl was taken to the Fortune Hospital in Kaligonj, Gazipur
District, but
unfortunately she passed away shortly after.
On 05 May 2008, a FIR was filed at Kaliganj Police station against all three
perpetrators, and accordingly, a case has been started against them. During
investigation, on 09 May 2008, the police recovered the body and requested a post-mortem
examination. The results showed that the girl died from a poisonous liquid that
came in contact with her mouth, possibly during the rape.
In light of the above, GHRD strongly urges the local police authorities to
follow-up
on the investigation of this case and to bring the perpetrators to justice. The
victims must receive necessary legal assistance, protection, and adequate
compensation for the damages caused.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident, as these violations frequently
take
place in Bangladesh.
