Prof. Yakin Ertürk, the Special Rapporteur of the United
Nations Human Rights Council on Violence against Women, its Causes and
Consequences, will conduct an official visit to Tajikistan, at the invitation
of the Government, from 15 to 23 May 2008.
During her visit, the Special Rapporteur will meet with
Government authorities, civil society members, representatives of United
Nations agencies and international organizations, and individual victims of
violence against women to assess the types of violence against women in
Tajikistan as well as the State response to address such violence. The
Special Rapporteur plans to visit Dushanbe, Khujand, Bobodjon Gafurovskiy and
Vakhdat districts, and Kurgan-Tyube to gather first-hand information on the
question of violence against women in the country.
Based on the information obtained during the visit, Ms.
Ertürk will present a report containing her findings and recommendations to a
forthcoming session of the Human Rights Council.
Yakin Ertürk, Professor of Sociology at Middle East
Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, was appointed Special Rapporteur on
Violence against Women in 2003.
