4^th SYMPOSIUM FOR RELIGIOUS LEADERS ENGAGED IN THE FIGHT AGAINST FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

ABIDJAN DECLARATION OF COMMITMENT

We, Moslem and Christian religious leaders, representing countries where the Inter-African Committee on Harmful Traditional Practices (IAC) has members, joined together in a symposium in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), through the initiative of IAC, on the 23^rd, 24^th and 25^th of October 2007,

• Highly commending the Inter-African Committee on this important platform for exchanging and sharing between different religious leaders of various faiths;
• Considering the commitment of African states in the fight for the total elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, through legal instruments;
• Considering that Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights and a serious infringement on the physical, psychological and moral integrity of women and children;
• Convinced that FGM has adverse consequences for the health of women and children, in the short, medium and long term;
• Convinced that Female Genital Mutilation had no religious basis in the Holy Bible, or in the authentic Christian traditions; nor in the Noble Quran, or in the authentic Islamic traditions;
• Considering earlier statements by distinguished religious authorities, both Christian and Muslim, on the non-existence of links between FGM and religion;
• Conscious that the total elimination of FGM can only be achieved through an organized campaign involving all actors in society
• Determined to make every effort to put an end to this harmful practice;

1. Commit ourselves to participating actively in the struggle for the total elimination of FGM not only in our respective countries but also wherever it exists;

2. Request scholars, exegetes and other Christian and Muslim authorities, to continuously disseminate everywhere the biblical and Koranic verses as well as the authentic Christian and Islamic traditions which confirm the unfounded nature of this practice;

3. Call on Christians and Muslims to abandon this practice in all its forms;

4. Request that the media, through their educational and informative capacities, to participate more actively in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation;

5. Launch an urgent appeal to governments, international agencies, non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations, to take all necessary measures and support all initiatives and actions for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation;

6. Pay tribute to the important decisions already taken in the struggle for the elimination of FGM, in particular Resolution A/RES/53/117 of the UN General Assembly, the additional Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of the Human and Peoples' Rights, and the adoption of 6^th February, as the International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM;

DECLARATION D’ENGAGEMENT D’ABIDJAN

Nous, leaders religieux, musulmans et chrétiens, représentant les pays membres du Comité Inter-Africain sur les Pratiques Traditionnelles Néfastes (CI-AF), réunis en symposium, à Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) sur initiative du CI-AF, les 23, 24 et 25 Octobre 2007,

• Félicitant énormément le Comité Inter Africain pour cette importante plate forme d’échange et de partage entre différents leaders religieux, de diverses confessions;
• Vu l’engagement des Etats africains dans la lutte en faveur de l’abandon total des Mutilations Génitales Féminines, à travers des instruments juridiques ;
• Considérant que les Mutilations Génitales Féminines (MGF) constituent une violation flagrante des droits humains et une atteinte grave à l’intégrité physique, psychologique et morale des femmes et des enfants;
• Convaincus que les MGF ont des conséquences néfastes sur la santé des femmes et des enfants, à court, moyen et long terme ;
• Convaincus que les Mutilations Génitales Féminines n’ont de fondement religieux ni dans la Sainte Bible, ni dans les traditions authentiques chrétiennes ; ni dans le Noble Coran, ni dans les traditions authentiques islamiques ;
• Considérant les déclarations antérieures de très hautes autorités religieuses chrétiennes et musulmanes sur la non existence de liens entre les MGF et les religions ;
• Conscients que l’on ne peut arriver à l’abandon total des MGF que par une lutte organisée impliquant tous les acteurs de la vie sociale ;
• Résolus à tout mettre en œuvre pour mettre fin à cette pratique néfaste ;

7. Nous engageons à participer activement à la lutte pour l’abandon total des MGF non seulement dans nos pays respectifs mais aussi partout où cette pratique existe ;

8. Demandons aux érudits, exégètes  et autres autorités chrétiennes et musulmanes, de diffuser en tout lieu et à tout moment les versets bibliques et coraniques ainsi que les traditions authentiques chrétiennes et islamiques confirmant le non-fondé de cette pratique ;

9. Appelons les fidèles chrétiens et musulmans à abandonner cette pratique sous toutes ses formes ;

10. Demandons aux médias, au regard de leur pouvoir éducatif et informatif, de s’impliquer plus fortement dans la lutte contre les Mutilations Génitales Féminines ;

11. Lançons un appel pressant aux gouvernements, institutions internationales, organisations non gouvernementales et organisations de la société civile, à prendre toutes les mesures nécessaires et à soutenir toutes les initiatives et actions pour l’élimination totale des Mutilations Génitales Féminines ;

12. Saluons les décisions importantes déjà prises dans le domaine de la lutte pour l’élimination des MGF, notamment la Résolution A/RES/53/117 de l’Assemblée Générale des Nations Unies, le Protocole additionnel à la charte africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples, et l’adoption de la date du 6 février comme Journée Internationale Tolérance Zéro aux MGF ;
