International concern for human rights abuses in Chechnya has virtually disappeared since the “war on terror” began in 2001. Priorities of the international community have shifted while tens of thousands of civilians have died, hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and access to justice and fundamental freedoms are continuously denied.
The Russian government has gone to great lengths to persuade the international community that the situation is steadily “normalizing”, yet human rights violations continue. Russian forces continue to engage in brutal violence against civilians, assisted by forces of Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov, while Chechen fighters commit unspeakable acts of violence in Chechnya and neighbouring republics. The ongoing war not only brings untold suffering to countless people but has undermined the goal of fighting terrorism, fuelling even more violence on both sides.
The photo exhibition will run in the European Parliament from 7 to 11 April 2008, and will be complimented by a roundtable discussion on 8 April 2008 entitled “Human Rights in Chechnya: What Can the EU Do?”.
