The Guild of Service, in order to do
away with the main bane of Indian society- the caste system and the pernicious
practice of dowry, conducts group marriage ceremonies in order to enable
couples undergoing economic hardship to get married.
The dowry free ceremony, promotes
remarriage of widows, inter caste and inter religious marriages. Expenses are
kept to a bare minimum and incurred entirely by the Guild of Service, and
donations from sensitized members of a civil society.
The marriages are performed
according to the religious orientation and/or wishes of the bride and groom and
they are also given basic amenities with which to start their lives together.
These include boxes, sarees, shirts and trousers, utensils, cooking stove and
cylinder, sewing machines, jewellery, blankets, bed and bath linen etc.
We also espouse family planning and
provide pre marital counselling to the couple, as well as information about
family planning.
Each year, at least 50 couples are
married through the Guild of Service. Since the practice began in 1972,
over 3000 couples have participated in this group marriage ceremony
program in India.
The marriages are also formally
registered and certificates given to the couples.
