Within the framework of the AFKAR II Project, KAFA (enough) Violence & Exploitation held a conference for the launch of its legal reform campaign entitled “Towards Protection of Women from Family Violence”, which is funded by the EU and managed by Omsar, on March 5 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hamra, Beirut between 3 and 5 pm.

The conference opened with an introduction by KAFA’s Managing Director, Ms. Zoya Rouhana, followed by addresses from Ms. Youmna Chacar Ghorayeb, representing the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform and coordinator of AFKAR Project, and Mr. Jussi Narvi, representing the European Union.

An interlude followed in which KAFA screened a 30 second TV spot produced on the subject of domestic violence as an introduction to a short talk given by Dr. Azza Charara Beydoun on the study she recently completed in collaboration with KAFA. The study, entitled “Femicide in the Lebanese Courts”, analyzes discourses within the court system in cases involving the murder of women primarily in incidents of family violence. It serves to outline some of the main reasons why this campaign is pushing for the adoption of a law to protect women from family-based violence. The main points of the proposed law were subsequently presented by Maitre Leila Awada, a lawyer working with Kafa. Accompanying these presentations was the Silent Witness exhibition, a series of life-size silhouettes of women killed in incidents of family violence whose stories were taken from actual cases in the Lebanese courts and recorded on their breastplates.

The conference concluded with the distribution of awards of appreciation to the committee that oversaw the drafting of the proposed law, composed of their honors judges John Azzi, Helene Iskandar, Joelle Fawwaz, Comandant Elie al-Asmar, Maitre Danielle Hoyek, and Maitre Leila Awada.
