AZERBAIJAN: "Clean World" Aid to Women Social Union

November 25 was the International Day of UN against all forms of violence women. On this day different kinds of events and campaigns were held in Azerbiajan to condemn all forms of violence against women. On this day “Clean World” Aid to Women Social Union joined to “16 day activity against Gender violence” campaign and took part in wide range of 16-day campaigns.

Since November 25, our organization has been conducting seminar/trainings with 18 women on the role of women in society and woman rights at our Training Center on Saturdays and Sundays. 18 socially active women who study and work at different universities and organizations attended these trainings. 10 of them was student, 6 of them work and 2 were house-wives. The topics of seminars/trainings were: “What is violence, what are reasons/roots of violence?”, “Gender and conflicts”, “Leadership”, “Mediation”, “How to prevent domestic violence?”, “Legislative acts (laws) on eliminating/preventing violence against women”. At the end of seminars/trainings the participants will be awarded with special certificates.

Besides these the representatives of the organization distributed to the men special flyers and papers with motto “Let us stop violence against women!” in the streets of Baku in the evenings. On these days our organization also plans to hold two-day seminars for woman journalists. The aim of these seminars is to keep on the agenda of Mass Media.

On December 1, we held another meeting with potential victims of HIV/AIDS. The representatives of the organization provided the potential victims (sex business labours) with enlightening booklets and condoms. Furthermore, the organizations provided sex business workers with gynaecologist to examine their health.

Besides “16 Day Activity Against Gender violence” Campaign, our organization also held three day seminars for immigrant women. 21 migrant women attended these seminars. The topic of the seminar was “Conflicts and Gender”. Afghan, Chechen, Iranian, Iraqi and other foreign refugees attended these seminars. We should note that 518 people have applied our organization for help during last year. 17 of them was men, 511 was women. 11 of the men applied because of domestic violence, 6 of them applied for different reasons. 49 women applied for other reasons, 462 women applied to our organization because of violence against them in the society and families.

We should underline that last year 324 women applied to our organization which was fewer than this year. This year our organization prevented the divorcing of 7 families who applied to Courts. Furthermore, our organization mediated in domestic conflicts of between husband and wife, mother and son and managed to solve their conflicts. On December 9, the representatives of the organization distributed white roses to the men in the streets of Baku.

On the ending of the campaign our organization held a roundtable on the violence against women with the representatives of NGOs and Mass Media.
