SWEDEN: WOMEN TO BE BETTER PROTECTED FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The cases of women who have been murdered by close relatives is to be taken up in a new initiative commissioned by the Swedish government.

Since the beginning of this year the Social Services are required to investigate every incident involving a child dying as a consequence of a crime.

Now the government wants to see a similar law concerning women who die due to violence inflicted by a close relation. Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports that around 17 women a year die in Sweden due to violence of this kind.
The minister for Elderly Care and Public Health, Maria Larsson, says it is an unacceptable situation and that something must be done to improve methods so that crime of this sort are prevented before they occur.

Men can also be victims of this crime but the government says although it is obviously a big problem for both sexes, their new plans will concentrate mainly on women as the incident rate is higher.
