GENDER ISSUES IN
EMPLOYMENT,
UNDEREMPLOYMENT, & INCOMES IN FIJI
Dr. Wadan Narsey
Who
works more in FIji - Females or Males? how much less household work do working
males do, than working Females, and how much extra per week should they do, to
make it fair? For the first time in fiji,
using sound national survey data from the Fiji
Islands bureau of statistics, this
study by Dr Wadan Narsey throws much light on these questions. There is
presented comprehensive incomes data on gender disparities for all Fiji
by a whole host of variables: gender, rural/urban, ethnicity, division,
industry, occupation, qualifications, age groups.
This study, unique for the
Pacific, is based on a sound national employment and unemployment survey
conducted by the Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics during 2004-05. Dr Narsey, who was previously a Professor in Economics
at The University of the South Pacific, examines for the first time total work
(including household work) done in the Fiji economy, incomes, and the incidence
of poverty.
This study provides the critical
data necessary to assess Fiji’s
progress towards objectives articulated by international agreements such as
CEDAW and the Beijing Plan of Action. There is solid national data on gender
gaps in paid work (females work less), household work, and total work (females
work more). There is also comprehensive
data on gender gaps in incomes disaggregated by industry, occupation,
qualifications, rural/urban, formal/informal sectors, and age. There is the usual “bad news”, but also some
“good news”. The book ends with a solid set of practical recommendations for
Government and other gender stakeholders towards reducing undesirable gender
gaps, as well as the setting of gender-sensitive National Development Goals to complement the MDGs.
