Discussions
of WATER and POVERTY are increasing in number and frequency.
There is no need to explain the importance of WATER, the vital
natural resource for human life, and its interconnection with the
eradication of POVERTY.
About the MDGs
The
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's time-bound and
quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many
dimensions-income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and
exclusion-while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental
sustainability. They are also basic human rights-the rights of each
person on the planet to health, education, shelter, and security.
- GOAL 1: Eradicate extreme
poverty and hunger
- GOAL 2: Achieve universal
primary education
- GOAL 3: Promote gender
equality and empower women
- GOAL 4: Reduce child
mortality
- GOAL 5: Improve maternal
health
- GOAL 6: Combat HIV/AIDS,
malaria and other diseases
- GOAL 7: Ensure
environmental sustainability
- GOAL 8: Develop a global
partnership for development

As the
MDGs are aimed at the mitigation
of POVERTY, WATER must play a critical role in the achievement of the MDGs.
In
order to gain a clearer picture of this widely acknowledged assumption, an
assessment was conducted to measure the degree to which the solution to
water-related problems impacts positively on the achievement of the overall
MDGs. The results of the assessment were presented by Board Chairman and
Japan Water Forum President, Mr. Ryutaro Hashimoto, at the 3rd
Meeting of the Board in Rome as a foundation for future discussion. >See the results of
the assessment
Example:
It is estimated that solving the problems of water and sanitation will make
a 30% contribution to the achievement of MDG 2, "Achieve universal
primary education."
