Cervical cancer
remains a serious public health
problem in Europe.
From the perspective of Europe as a whole, 50,000 women develop cervical cancer and approximately 25,000 die from this disease every year. Of equal importance, the number of women living with cervical cancer (being treated or otherwise) at any one point in time in Europe is more than 175,000.
Within the EU-25, approximately 33,000 women develop cervical cancer and 15,000 women die from this disease every year. However, compared to the original EU-15, the situation in the 10 new member states and other Eastern European countries is much worse with incidence and mortality rates that are double those seen in the EU-15. This difference is largely due to the absence of properly organised screening programmes. These programmes, together with effective public health educational programmes to ensure that women access the services provided, would inevitably decrease the burden of cervical cancer in these countries and ensure more equitable healthcare for all the citizens of the EU.
