Gender & Financing for Development (FfD)

As governments convened at the U.N. last week to follow up on the Financing for Development (FfD) process, civil society groups said that financial resources for sustainable development, poverty eradication, gender equality and the empowerment of women are insufficient. Did you know that:

• Women own 10% of global GDP and 1% of land worldwide?
• Women's unpaid, "invisible" work amounts to 10-30% of the world's GDP, or roughly $11 trillion?
• Only 0.1% of official development assistance is spent on gender equality?
• UNIFEM's 2006 budget ($57 million) was a mere fraction of  UNICEF's ($2.7 billion) or UNDP's ($3.5 billion)?

The Women's Statement on Financing for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, endorsed by 18 organizations around the world, is now available for download! Read the Press Release by WEDO, Women in Development Europe (WIDE) and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) Feminist Task Force, calling for governments to uphold their commitments to funding for gender equality.
