Why gender training for peacekeepers? |
United Nations peacekeeping missions operate under the mandate to create
conditions for sustainable peace. Peacekeepers work in difficult circumstances
where challenges such as gender-based violence, culturally specific gender
roles and unequal power relations between peacekeeping personnel and the
civilian population have to be addressed adequately. In order to fulfil their
mandates and to respond to these challenges, the integration of a gender
perspective in all spheres of all peacekeeping missions is essential, as
emphasised in the Windhoek Declaration and the Security Council
Resolution 1325.
An effective way to promote gender equality in peacekeeping missions is to
integrate a gender perspective into peacekeeping training, so that peacekeeping
personnel can better understand the social context in which the operations are
carried out and the positive and negative impacts that their actions can have
on the host country.

on gender issues and brings together materials that can be used in gender

Gender and
Peacekeeping Online Training Course
An online resource for a three-day training on gender and peacekeeping,
developed by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department for
International Development in 2000.
SGTM 17: Gender Equality in Peacekeeping
The 17th Standardized Generic Training Module developed by the UN DPKO for
pre-deployment training of peacekeeping personnel introduces the concept of
gender equality. In a 90-minute presentation,
the aim of the module is to show peacekeepers how women and men are affected by
conflict; the impact that conflict has on gender roles and relations; and how
peacekeeping operations can help women and men benefit equally during the
transition from war to peace.
Gender and Peacekeeping Operations in-Mission Training
The training manual developed by the UN DPKO is designed to enable instructors
to read, prepare and deliver basic training on the meaning and implications of
Gender and Peacekeeping Operations for peacekeeping personnel already deployed
on mission.
Gender
Perspectives in UN Peacekeeping Operations
This correspondence course by UNITAR Programme for Correspondence Instruction
(POCI) covers conceptual and operational issues involved in integrating a
gender perspective in peace support operations. The course emphasizes the need
for women to have a strategic role at all decision-making levels in mission and
in national and local institutions. The E-Learning for African Peacekeepers initiative allows
military, police and gendarmerie peacekeeping personnel who are citizens of
African nations to take all UNITAR POCI distance-learning courses free of
charge.
Gender resource package for peacekeeping operations
A reference guide on gender mainstreaming in all operational areas of UN peace
operations for peacekeeping personnel in mission and in Headquarters, developed
by the UN Department for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Best Practices Unit.
UNICEF Training of Trainers on Gender-Based Violence: Focusing
on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
A two-day training programme targeted at UNICEF country staff and immediate partners,
designed to increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of the concept
of gender, and gender-based violence and sexual exploitation and abuse.
Understanding Humanitarian Aid Worker Responsibilities: Sexual
Exploitation and Abuse Prevention. A Facilitator's Guide
This training manual has been created to provide Humanitarian Aid Workers in
Sierra Leone with a basic understanding of sexual exploitation and abuse and is
intended for use in trainings over one or two days for aid workers who have
little or no experience or understanding of SEA issues.
