Urgent Note from CaucAsia: "Who Will Be Elected To European Parliament Judges from Ukraine - Parliament Lobbied Man, or Society Supported Woman?

The Special Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will study the candidates for filling vacant positions of the European Court Judges. Ukraine has officially presented three candidates for the human rights judge position. A specific male candidate is considered to have the most chances of being chosen to fill the candidacy. However, Ukranian society is concerned. Letters have been written to the European Parliament on this issue.

The CaucAsia article in a forthcoming issue, and by Vladimir Khanas of Ukraine, is entitled: Balance - The European Parliament Lacks Gender Sensitivity, But Still Has Time to Improve the Situation.

Election of Anna Yudkovskaya would improve some of the gender misbanance in the European Court. Anna Yudkovskaya is a lawyer and well-known Ukranian national human rights activist, who presently works as a secretary within the European Court. It is said that 9 out of 10 Ukranian competition commission members voted for her candidacy while Sergey Golovaty, supported by certain members of the European Parliament, received only 4 votes by the Ukranian competition commission.

Maidan-Inform News Agency has asked a question: Will the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe members hear the opinion of Ukranian national society, or will they demonstrate superiority of politics above human rights?

SON vs. DAUGHTER

"I always wanted to have a son. I remember my mom saying that she felt sorry, when discovering that I was a girl. "But why? I asked her, "You already have a son."

"It is hard to be a woman," my mom responded, "They have a difficult destiny. They are always in charge for everything taking place in the family. And, they always have to sacrifice themselves. And everyone can hurt them...... That is why I dreamed about a son, my aid and my defender."

ESTONIA

By Ruta Pels

"The solution of the demography problem is a top agenda item in Estonia, with its aging population. A quarter of all Estonian families have children. The average number of children per family is 1.5

The State of Estonia has recently offered several incentives to increase the population, including parental salery.  Monthly parental salary can be paid even in the case when neither parent had worked, and is paid until the newborn reaches three years of age.

According to PRAXIS Center for Political Studies in Estonia, due to family allowances, parental salary and tax-free income, the number of children living beyond the poverty level decreased by approximately one-third, or by over 20,000."
