Saudi Arabia - Daycare Centers Hard to Find in Saudi

JEDDAH — Even though it has been nearly two years since the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs announced new rules and regulations concerning providing daycare centres in establishments that have working mothers, the service is still unavailable.

Working mothers were relieved when this was announced. But as the rules have not been implemented yet, they have called for daycare services at work places so that they could care for their babies even while attending to their duties to earn a living.

Mothers returning from their maternity leave continue to suffer from a lack of suitable and affordable daycare facilities for their children.

According to the law, businesses with 50 or more women and at least 10 working mothers must pay for daycare services to children under six years of age. For businesses with over 100 women, a staffed daycare facility must be provided on the premises.

The MoL did not provide with any information about whether the new law has actually resulted in the introduction of daycare facilities, how many establishments have been inspected since the law was passed, or if companies have actually been penalised for violating the regulations.
