First Meeting of Pacific Women's Economic Board

Members of a new Advisory Board that will oversee a Plan to Advance the Economic Development of Pacific Women met for the first time today.

The Pacific Women's Economic Development Advisory Board was announced last month to oversee the implementation of the new Pacific Women's Economic Development Plan. The Board is chaired by Pele Walker, who is joined by Shirley Sisepi-Fraser, Diane Mara and Caren Rangi.

"These are highly talented Pacific women who have a history of strong leadership and of empowering our Pacific women to achieve," says Associate Minister of Pacific Island Affairs Luamanuvao Winnie Laban.

"Pasifika peoples have made great advances already under the Labour-led government. I am confident these talented women will bring this Plan into fruition and lift the economic potential and prosperity of our Pacific women in New Zealand," says Laban.

The Plan focuses on key areas for development including education; workforce development; business development and leadership.

Board member profiles: • Pele Walker is well experienced in the issues many women face in business as the owner of People Mediation, a practice which focuses on mediation and conflict resolution. She is also the chair of the Creative New Zealand Pacific Arts Committee as well as a member of the St James Theatre Trust.

• Diane Mara has undertaken extensive research and her work has been extensively published over many years. Diane was recently awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Victoria University of Wellington. Currently Diane is the national president of PACIFICA.

• Shirley Sisepi-Fraser expertise and talent in business and technology have gained international exposure. Shirley is also a current member of the Pacific Business Trust Board.

• Caren Rangi currently provides advice to Maori and Pacific community organisations through consultancy company Kahui Tautoko Limited. Caren's strengths lie in policy development, strategic planning and relationship building. She is also a member of the Pacific Business Trust Board.
