In many developing countries, women and girls walk on average six kilometres each day to fetch water. They carry around 20 kilograms -- the equivalent of a cabin luggage -- on their heads.

Women are the hardest hit by limited quantities and poor quality water since in developing countries it is they who are responsible for supplying freshwater for the household and agricultural activities of their families and communities. They often spend hours every day fetching water to provide for their family's needs.
