Subject: United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
WHEREAS the United Nations, together with Indigenous Peoples, have engaged in over twenty years of work directed at achieving agreement on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the Declaration);
WHEREAS this work has resulted in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2006 which is essential to the survival, dignity and well-being of Indigenous Peoples;
WHEREAS this Declaration as adopted by the Human Rights Council recognizes the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the right of self-determination, rights related to lands, resources and territories and promotes the right to live free from violence and discrimination;
WHEREAS the United Nations Human Rights Council recommended this Declaration for immediate adoption by the United Nations General Assembly which deferred consideration of this recommendation until no later than the end of its 61st session which is by September 2007; and
WHEREAS the 5th Continental Meeting of Indigenous Women of the Americas: Restoring our Balance has focused on the importance of advancing the human rights of Indigenous women, their families and their communities. This Declaration is essential for achieving this goal as discussed by many participants,
THEREFORE be it resolved that ENLACE calls upon all States within the Americas to vote in favor of the immediate adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2006 without amendment without delay.
