May 28 - June 1: Moscow
26th WORLD CONGRESS OF THE INTERNATIONAL
FEDERATION OF JOURNALISTS
CaucAsia Gender Journalists attended
the IFJ Congress, and the June CaucAsia Issue covers the Congress.
"Crisis of security, crisis of
freedom, and crisis of work - These are important problems of the world of
journalism, as listed by a speaker at the IFJ Congress.
CaucAsia was invited to the IFJ
Congress to contribute new ideas to the IFJ gender program. We did our best to
prepare and contribute to the Congress. But, the contrary stream was too hard.
There were beauties as live advertisement, including scantily dressed women
performers (photos included in CaucAsia June Magazine). There were all male
presidiums. There was remarkable gender insensibility and insensitivity at the
IFJ Congress. Women's issues were not touched at all in the Main Hall program
discussions.
Some Muslim and other men felt a bit
confused from the beginning of the Congress with the naked girls show, but they
persevered to report on the Moscow Congress to their national journalists'
unions.
The Congress program irritated
serious participants who came to discuss problems and to share experiences.
CaucAsia was invited to the
International Federation of Journalists Congress to support the fight for
equality, and to contribute to the promotion of gender issues in IFJ. But, it
turned out that almost nobody heard us.
At the final dinner that closed the
Congress, we were told that there was a surprise for the delegates, a dancing
girls show with girls in spangled bikinis and feathery hats.
There was an exhibit of photographs.
One example was a photo of two half-nude women supporting the sign of a rental
agency, and entitled, 'Women for Rent.'
During the Congress, there was a
Gallery of Murdered Journalists, and fresh flowers in their memory.
Russian authorities ignored the
International Congress of Journalists, and did not make a statement. We found
out that the authorities received an unofficial order not to participate in the
Congress.
The International Federation of
Journalists unites some half-million journalists from 150 countries."
