THE WOMANSTATS PROJECT

What is WomanStats?

The WomanStats Project aims to provide researchers, policymakers, governmental and non-governmental organizations, students, and laypersons with the most comprehensive compilation of information on the status of women in the world. By so doing, the Project facilitates seeing and demonstrating the linkage between the situation of women and the situation of nation-states as well as the broader world community of nations.

The Project is funded by the David M. Kennedy Center for International and Area Studies, the Women's Research Institute, the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, and the Office of Research and Creative Activities of Brigham Young University, as well as the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, Ruth Silver, and Hunt Alternatives. The Project began in 2001, and today includes five principal investigators at three universities, as well as a team of up to twenty graduate and undergraduate data extractors.

The WomanStats Database

The WomanStats Database contains over 240 variables on the status of women for all nation-states with over 200,000 population (172 total nation-states). It is freely accessible from the quicklink at the above left ("Enter the Database"). To use the database, one must first explore the 243 variables available by accessing the codebook that provides the abbreviation of the variable's name, as well as the information one can expect to find coded for the variable. With the abbreviations for the variables, one may search the database for that information for the countries desired. The Introductory Tutorial is a good place to begin for those unfamiliar with the database.

The database is continually updated, and we also hope that the users of the database will contribute any information or data of which they are aware, but which does not yet appear in our database. Bibliographic references for every piece of information are noted in the database.
