Course Description
This course will focus on historical
and contemporary campaigns for ending human trafficking and slavery and on
providing services to contemporary victims of human trafficking and slavery. The
course will include discussion of sex trafficking, slavery, bonded labor,
traditional practices of domestic servant slavery, and child soldiers. Physical
and psychological harm to victims will be covered. Services needed for victim
rehabilitation and recovery, including protocols for raids, shelters, and
repatriation will be discussed. Course materials include history texts, research
reports, survivor testimonies, description of campaigns for public awareness,
protocols for services, and outlines for recovery programs.

Delivery
Students will access and participate in the course
through WebCT at the University of Rhode Island

past, students and service providers have enrolled from Thailand, Canada,
England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Albania, as well as from all over the U.S.
The class begins on September 5 and runs through December 10,

Non-Rhode Island Residents & International Students
(who are not service providers) – $887/credit ($2661 for the course)
Non-Rhode Island Residents and Service Providers) -
$469/credit ($1407 for the course) A Service Provider is anyone who on a
professional or volunteer basis provides services to victims of violence or
trafficking, or who works for or is affiliated with a service agency, for
example: The Salvation Army, Catholic organizations, law enforcement agents,
non-governmental organizations that assist victims. Please request agency to
send information regarding your position as a service provider, identifying the
organization with which you work, to Donna M. Hughes at dhughes@uri.edu at the
time of registration.
