Japan Strengthens Domestic Violence Law to Cover Threats

Japan's domestic violence prevention law was revised on Thursday to allow courts to issue an order for protection even if no physical attacks have taken place.

The domestic violence prevention law took effect in 2001. After a Cabinet Office investigation found that many separated people suffer domestic violence from their former spouses through telephone calls or e-mails, the ruling coalition submitted a revised bill.

The revised law, approved by the House of Representatives, allows courts to issue an order of protection even in a case where no physical violence is involved, but there have been threats of violence. The law covers the victim, their children, parents and supporters.

More concretely, courts can order perpetrators not to send dead animals, feces, obscene texts and images to victims, nor make anonymous and repeated phone calls. (Mainichi)
