The plight of women and girls in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s women and girls are undervalued, discriminated against, victims of domestic violence and exhibit one of the highest suicide rates in the world. To improve the lives of these women a better understanding of their plight is needed.

This benchmark study provides a comprehensive literature review and analysis of research, published between 1999 and 2004, that pertains to females in Hong Kong. It reviews 16 topic areas including violence, leadership, aging, social welfare and poverty, self-perceptions, and work place roles.

Based on the reports analysis, authors emphasise the need to:

• encourage more leadership from women
• broaden women’s issues beyond the province of women
• build on the work discussed in this report to continually learn about women and their community
• ask meaningful and difficult questions to fill the gaps in research
