The Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW), based in the Lebanese American University, is soliciting articles for the forthcoming issue of the quarterly publication, Al–Raida. The central topic for this edition of the journal will be "Refugee Women in the Arab World."
We are interested in receiving papers based on academic
studies or critical essays that address concerns related to refugee women
in the Arab world. Within this issue, we will focus on understanding the
gender-specific experiences of Arab women externally displaced from their
countries of origin. The papers to be considered will explore womanhood and
social, cultural, or religious identity within the context of a refugee
situation and is open to a wide range issues, from life-giving opportunities
to social exclusion. Topics can include, but are not limited to, the
following:
* Impact of refugee
situation on gender dynamics within the family and on motherhood, womanhood, and
adolescence;
* Gender/cultural sensitivity of aid to refugee women in the
Arab World;
* Social and political discrimination, particularly with regard
to gender;
* Expression of gender, identity, and experience within a refugee
context;
* Formal and informal networks of refugee women in the Arab world;
* Representation of Arab refugee women in the media and in public
discourse;
* Activism and Arab refugee women.
As a special feature
of this issue, we are interested in receiving poetry which expresses and
explores the experience of being an Arab refugee woman.
If you are
interested in contributing to this issue of Al-Raida, kindly send your abstract
(250–300 words) by no later than August 15, 2007 . All abstracts submitted are reviewed by Al–Raida's
editorial staff and are subject to its approval.
