Iran Denies International Commitments to Stop Stoning

30 June 2007

Iranian Labour New Agency -The head of Human Rights Committee of Iran had a meeting with the Green Party representative at the German parliament and the group accompanying him. In the meeting both parties emphasized on developing and improving the relationship between Iran and Germany.

Mohammad Javad Larigani and Jurgen Trittin discussed the issues of human rights, the political problems of the region and implementation and principles of human rights.

The head of Human Right Committee of Iran and the Judiciary Consultant on International Matters has told in this meeting, "The contents of human rights' codes should be strictly according to and within the frame of customs of states and in this matter stands the big mistake of the West, that instead of acquainting with the Islamic laws, they have appointed the procedure of pressure, demurrer, protest and denouncing which is not a proper way."

He added:" Indeed, there are lots of things which the judiciaries of countries can do with the association of each other such as managing the prisons, establishing the duress and punishment regarding the juveniles (adolescents), and definitely they can reach to a promising conclusion."

Larigani said:"We recommend western governments to appoint the procedure of positive negotiation and useful cooperation without politicizing it."

The Head of Human Rights Committee of Iran said: "Western countries reprove Iran in two fields: the first one is on the proper implementation of the law, our country itself persist on the proper implementation of the law and the Head of Iran's Judicatory, himself, insists adamantly on this matter."

He added: "Moreover, with the establishment of the Human Rights Committee in the previous year, this Committee as a national institution oversees the proper implementation of the human rights laws in other responsible institutions."

The Iranian Judiciary Consultant on International Matters talked about how the Committee defends [the Iranian Jidiciary] against criticisms, "This Committee has responded to the UN about its criticism with clear reasoning and clarifications and is indeed willing to provide a similar response to any country willing to know. We are proud of our judiciary system."

About the second criticism the western countries make against Iran he stated, ""The second criticism is about our law, such as death penalty, stoning, and so forth. We have to say that the criticisms of the western countries are beyond the Islamic Republic of Iran's commitments since our international commitments do not include any of these cases."

He affirmed, "The international commitments are not in contradiction with our laws, but what is contradictory is just the strictly western and liberal interpretations by the western countries which they use as a base to reprove other estates."

According to this report, the issue of the austerity Muslims especially women face in the western countries and the many cases of financial and vital insecurity of them which has aggravated recently were discussed.

The German Green Party member and the previous Minister of Environment asked questions about Iraq's circumstance and the region's matters and Larigani said, "Our strategy is to have a stable and sovereign Iraq, but unfortunately, England and America and their allies have the opposite policy."

Larigani said: "We think stability in Iraq should be done by the Iraq's forces and through supporting the legitimate government and by the hand of Iraq's forces, so the US military should not tie the hands of the Iraqi security and judiciary and provide them a free hand."

He added: "Militarizing suspicious forces especially the Baath agents with the pretension of confronting with Al-Qaida is a dangerous path for the region."

At the end of the meeting, the German Green Party representative requested the progress of Iran and Germany's interactions in order to reach to a better relationship between the two countries.
