Delegates Presented with CEDAW Legislative Compliance Report

This joint
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Centre and UNIFEM Pacific
report measures CEDAW legislative compliance against a set of 113 indicators
that were developed and used to complete legislative compliance reviews of nine
This report
can be used by Pacific governments, civil society and gender/human rights
advocates in the following ways:
The
completed country compliance reviews provide an important road map for each
country to use in developing its short term and longer term national plan for
CEDAW implementation.
“Regional
organizations and United Nations (UN) agencies are increasingly working together
to provide support for the ratification and implementation of CEDAW,” said Linda
Petersen, Manager of the Human Development Programme of the SPC.
“One of the
priority areas identified in the last triennial conference in 2004 was support
for the development of legislative and legal frameworks particularly in relation
to CEDAW. “Translating CEDAW into Law :
CEDAW Legislative Compliance in
Governments
and NGOs from across the Pacific will continue discussions about “Translating CEDAW into Law: CEDAW Legislative Compliance in Nine Pacific
Island Countries” and developing regional strategies to implement CEDAW at a
Triennial workshop on Thursday May 31 convened by the UNDP Pacific Centre, UNDP
RRRT and UNIFEM Pacific Regional Office.
The 10th Triennial of
Pacific Women is attended by 120 Pacific ministers, civil servants and
representatives of civil society, development and donor bodies. The Triennial
finishes on Thursday and will be followed by the Third Ministers Meeting on
Women on Friday June 1. Both meetings are held at the Secretariat of the Pacific
Community’s (SPC) headquarters in
