CEDAW LEGISLATIVE COMPLIANCE IN NINE PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES: TRANSLATING CEDAW INTO LAW

Pacific Delegates Presented with CEDAW Legislative Compliance Report

May 29, 2007 - Noumea, New Caledonia - Delegates at the 10th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women were presented with a new tool to use in achieving gender equality -“Translating CEDAW into Law: CEDAW Legislative Compliance in Nine Pacific Island Countries.”

This joint United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Centre and UNIFEM Pacific report measures CEDAW legislative compliance against a set of 113 indicators that were developed and used to complete legislative compliance reviews of nine Pacific Island countries, which are: the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu . This report was first launched for International Women’s Day in Suva earlier this year.

This report can be used by Pacific governments, civil society and gender/human rights advocates in the following ways:

The completed country compliance reviews provide an important road map for each country to use in developing its short term and longer term national plan for CEDAW implementation.

“Regional organizations and United Nations (UN) agencies are increasingly working together to provide support for the ratification and implementation of CEDAW,” said Linda Petersen, Manager of the Human Development Programme of the SPC.

“One of the priority areas identified in the last triennial conference in 2004 was support for the development of legislative and legal frameworks particularly in relation to CEDAW. “Translating CEDAW into Law : CEDAW Legislative Compliance in Nine Pacific Island Countries” is an important example of ground breaking work in this area,” she said.

Governments and NGOs from across the Pacific will continue discussions about “Translating CEDAW into Law: CEDAW Legislative Compliance in Nine Pacific Island Countries” and developing regional strategies to implement CEDAW at a Triennial workshop on Thursday May 31 convened by the UNDP Pacific Centre, UNDP RRRT and UNIFEM Pacific Regional Office.

The 10th Triennial of Pacific Women is attended by 120 Pacific ministers, civil servants and representatives of civil society, development and donor bodies. The Triennial finishes on Thursday and will be followed by the Third Ministers Meeting on Women on Friday June 1. Both meetings are held at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community’s (SPC) headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia.
