FOOD FOR WOMEN: FIRST AMONG EQUALS

In Africa , 80 percent of farmers are women; in Asia, the figure is 60 percent. In these places, women not only cook food. They sow, reap and harvest it. Experience also shows that in the hands of women, food aid is more likely to reach its target.

From distribution centres in the Palestinian Territories to special committees in Rwanda, WFP food aid is increasingly handed out through women.

Educating women is also important. Many mothers still know too little about nutrition to make the best use of the food that is available to them. Research shows that educated mothers give birth to healthy, well-nourished children.

A study of 63 countries by the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington found that improvements in women's education helped to reduce the proportion of children who were malnourished by 50 percent between 1970 and 1995.

WFP also provides food rations to families who send their girls to school.

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY

There is more than enough food to feed the world's population, so WFP is not resigned to hunger. Food aid can break the cycle of poverty and hunger.

Even though there is more than enough food in the world to feed the world's 6.4 billion people, the poor do not have the money to buy it or the means to produce it.
