Violence Against Girls
3 Research Papers
Unconscionable violence is perpetrated against girls in every
part of the world. Girls are at risk of violence on the streets, in schools,
where they work, and in institutions. In too many cases, girls are betrayed by
the very individuals responsible for their protection and well being: their
guardians, their teachers, their employers, and the police.
The 51st UN Commission on the Status of Women, which
began February 27, 2007, focused on the elimination of discrimination and
violence against the girl child. Human Rights Watch background papers prepared
for this session summarize recent research on violence against girls in more
than 15 countries, with a focus on violence in education, child labor, and
juvenile justice systems.
