UNESCO - Education - Girls

In a majority of developing countries girls continue to face discrimination with regards to access to school. As a result, they comprise about 57% of all out-of-school children.

Over 70 countries are at risk of not achieving the Education for All goal of gender parity by 2005, and some will not even meet this goal by 2015.

ACT Project Overview
ACT Project: Assisting Communities Together - Pilot phase 1998-1999

Launch of the 5th phase (2005-2007) of the ACT project

The ACT Project has entered into a new phase in its support for global action to promote human rights education at the field level. The proposed two-year phase will cover the period November 2005 to May 2007.

The fifth phase of the ACT Project puts a special emphasis on activities related to human rights education in the primary and secondary school systems (including, for instance, material development/translation; workshop/training course for relevant authorities, teachers and other education personnel; school competitions and debates), although not exclusively supporting grants in this area. This is to create synergy with the newly-proclaimed World Programme for Human Rights Education (2005-ongoing) , whose first phase (2005-2007) focuses on the primary and secondary school systems.

Additional criteria for the selection of the grants, as in previous phases, will be that the proposed grants should be as much as possible innovative, replicable, designed to provide maximum sustainable impact at the local level. It should be also evident that the grant recipients have insufficient financial means for implementing them.

In principle, the time allocated to the grant recipients to carry out the funded activities will remain of six months, as in previous phases (tentatively, March-October 2006).

The following countries will participate in the 5th phase of the ACT Project:
