Women and HIV/AIDS: Breaking the Silence

The worldwide HIV/AIDS pandemic has an increasingly female face.  For example, young women in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by HIV/AIDS, are three times more likely to be living with HIV than young men.. You can hear women’s voices and stories as they deal with HIV/AIDS as survivors, caregivers, healthcare workers, activists and policymakers on a special public radio program on women and AIDS..

The hour-long show explores the many ways in which HIV/AIDS impacts women globally, and is co-produced by the Women’s Edge Coalition, in partnership with the Communications Consortium Media Center and the Mainstream Media Project.  .

The full program features the stories of six women, all of whom have experienced first-hand the impact that HIV and AIDS has on a woman, her family, and her community. Guest interviews touch upon many different facets of the disease, from global initiatives to empower women and girls to protect themselves against HIV/AIDS to the personal story of a grandmother raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren orphaned by AIDS in Uganda. The show adds an important dimension to World AIDS Day, marked all over the world this month.

The radio show was on US local public radio on December 13. It will also be available on the Mainstream Media Project website http://www.mainstream-media.net/ and on the Women's Edge website www.womensedge.org.
