ASHURA
Ashura is the 10th day of the month of Muharram and
the memorial day of the death of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad....In
Iran, several rituals devoted to Ashura take place.....
Ashura can be not only a religious event, it rather
belongs to Iran's popular culture...
In Ashura, celebrations often feature male figures,
and scenes of war are central.
I wanted to give women a visible role. I therefore,
added the images of the female to the type of decorations that are commonly
found during Ashura in placed of religious worship.

PROSTITUTES
"The government did its utmost to hush up the
murders of prostitutes. Hardly anything was written about them in the
media....It made me very angry that nobody stood up for the victims, women who
had been forced by poverty to work as prostitutes.
By blowing up their photographs into enormous
portraits, I wanted to give these women and their families their honor back. For
me, this is not a political motive but a human one."
