The Mediterranean Institute of Gender has received funding from the National
Machinery for Women’s Rights to carry out a research project entitled “Mapping
the Realities of Trafficking of Women in Cyprus”.
Aim:
The main aim of the proposed
project is to gain and share awareness, knowledge and understanding of the
phenomenon of trafficking in women in Cyprus for the purpose of sexual
exploitation. The project will be carried out using a gender-sensitive
perspective. The main aim of the proposed project is to gain and share
awareness, knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon of trafficking in women
in Cyprus for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Objectives:
The project will:
- Map and assess existing data on the extent of trafficking in women in Cyprus and state responses to the problem.
- Conduct research on the issue of trafficking in women in Cyprus for the purpose of sexual exploitation in order to assess the conditions and circumstances under which they are forced to live in Cyprus; further, to attempt to create a profile of these women in order to be able to identify them for the purpose of future interventions and prevention of the phenomenon [qualitative study using interviews with trafficked women]
- Raise awareness of the phenomenon of trafficking in women for sexual exploitation as well as the living conditions of trafficked women in Cyprus.
MIGS has also received funding from the National Machinery for Women’s Rights to produce and circulate information leaflets and posters with the aim to inform and sensitise the public and relevant stakeholders on trafficking in women for the purpose of sexual and labour exploitation.
