Argentina Rethinks Domestic Violence
Argentina Rethinks Domestic Violence

Buenos Aires, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Chamber of Deputies could approve a reform of the national law on domestic violence regarding the mistreatment of women before the end of the present year.

The information was provided by the High Chamber Justice Commission focusing on the project entitled Preventing, Sanctioning and Eradicating Violence against Women, the Telam Official News Agency highlighted.

The document received the report of the Family Commission and will now be also submitted to that of Budget and Finances.

According to the content of the project of reforms presented by Deputy Marcela Rodriguez, the definition of violence is extended to behaviors that damages emotions and self-esteem.

It also intends to condemn humiliating treatments, permanent or intermittent persecution, intimidation or blackmail.

With the new regulations expected to be endorsed, women would have the right to ask for judicial protection from violent actions of boyfriends or ex-partners, unlike the present law which only entails spouses or common-law husbands.

The possibility that judges order retributions for the damages caused to the victims could be one of the benefits.
