International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Dear Human Rights Activists,

Please stand for women and girls who are suffering from everyday violence against girls. Girls are not expected here in this country. People expect a male child as a child not a girl child because girls are symbol of problem, suffering and it creates millions of problems for parents, family and community at the end for the country. Girl child is popularly known as "Problem Child".

Birth of a child is a great blessings for every family. Every parents become pleased when they beomce parents. Becoming parents of a girl child is a matter of shame and so it is a disaster from Almighty.

PHREB has conducted a survey among 850 families: mixed rich-poor-educated-uneducated families asking three questions: Do you they prefare a male child or female child?
Why they do not expect a female child?
What do they do after getting a female child?

93% of women in reply said they expect a male child because a son is a blessings from almighty for the parents and country and a daughter is a problem. They said a daughter is a problem for its family, community and states. They do not want to be ashmed so that they do not want to be mother of a problem child. Being called a mother of daughters is a matter of shocking and shame for 96% women we interviewed.

Pregnant mothers rush to the religous imams for religous medicine for herself and her husband so that they can get a son. When they get daughter instead of a son the mother and newly born baby treated ferociously by the families. They do not see a doctor, care and treatement. Because they all are burden.

In the recent months we have seen stories of killing girls themselves because they are not treated as human being by the family, community. They are pushed to the wall so that they have to do only one thing is killed herself hanging on the roof. In last one year from November 2005 to October 2006 11 girls committed suicide in only Chittagong Metropolitan city of Bangladesh.

Three newly born babies were killed by their own fathers in Cox's Bazar. Bably a beautiful girl was thrown acid by her own father at the age of 6 month's old. A father had thrown acid on his 14 girls because they are girls.

We do not want to write more because it is so pathetic and barbaric. We would appeal you to stand for women and girls in every corner in this world. Because they are human being. Please stand for girls right now from your position whereever you are. Please raise your voice for girls' human rights.

Your input in our works will be appreciable.
