Each  year at least 1.6 million newborns die in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Africa region has the highest rate of neonatal mortality in the world, and has shown the slowest progress so far in reducing neonatal deaths.
 
Over a million African babies are estimated to die in the first 4 weeks of life - but most
die at home, uncounted, and invisible to national and regional policies and programmes.
