“Protecting children from violence: Their right - Our duty”

November 19, 2006 - World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse

Thousands of awareness flyers, posters, stickers and pins will be distributed on November 19 to raise awareness on the problem of child abuse in Lebanon.

The Higher Council for Childhood-the Ministry Of Social Affairs launches a campaign jointly with KAFA (enough) violence and exploitation and World Vision-Lebanon on the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse all over Lebanon.

Throughout the world children are vulnerable to abuse by adults. Children who become internally displaced within their own countries are in need of special attention. During times of war, people are brutally uprooted and forced to flee their homes, exposing them to danger and insecurity. Wherever it occurs, displacement has a profound physical, emotional and developmental impact on children and increases their vulnerability. Thousands of civilians including many children were displaced during this summer’s war in Lebanon. Therefore, there is a special need to raise awareness of abuse of children right now.

Very few children can realize that they are victims of abuse, especially when it is perpetrated by one of the family members. Cases are usually not reported. as it is preferred to keep the issue within the family secrecy. At the same time, such practices have very serious implications on the victims, especially in their social conduct. The most serious effects are on the psychological level, where the impacts are not easily detected.

The Higher Council for Childhood-the Ministry Of Social Affairs, KAFA (enough) violence and exploitation, The World Vision-Lebanon and various Civil Society Organizations are launching their campaign on November 19 to raise awareness for the prevention of child abuse. The campaign is based on article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which recognizes that children are entitled to special care and assistance, and that all children have the right to social protection.

On November 19, 35000 stickers and flyers about different forms of child abuse will be distributed on streets along with a white flower as a message of peace and non-violence by children, youths and members of the Interior Security Forces.

Information posters will appear in schools, childhood protection NGOs, community centers and other public places to sensitize the entire Lebanese society to the problem of child abuse and information kits (poster, flyer, pin, and sticker) will be distributed to parliamentarians, ministers, NGOS, Universities, Schools, Ministry Development Community Centers and Dispensaries to reach as wide as possible.
