The main
reason that Azerbaijani women appear in prison is that they have been
subjected to violence, the Chairman of the State Commission for Problems
of Families, Women and Children Gulnara Mammadova told a press conference
on 2 November,Trend reports. She stressed that at present there are 264
women located in the prisons in Azerbaijan, 80% of which have
committed serious crimes due to family violence.
“It
is a shame that our women cannot notify the relevant organisations about
family violence and have to resort to killing their abusers, the result of
which is imprisonment,” Mammadova told.
Presented by the
National Network of Women and IDPs in Fizuli, Agdam and Ganja cities,
information was given regarding the cases of violence against women and
marriages at an early age. It was stated, as a result of the regional
project UNIFEM “Women for peace and prevention of conflicts in South
Caucasus”, that the key problem in the regions is that girls are expected
to marry at an early age which results in divorce.
The Azerbaijani Co-ordinator of the project, Gulshan
Pashayeva stated that it had appealed to the State Commission for Problems
of Families, Women and Children to eradicate this problem
