FIMI Releases Report on Violence Against Indigenous Women

Mairin Iwanka Raya: Indigenous Women Stand against Violence

In December 2003, the UN General Assembly requested that the Secretary-General conduct an in-depth study of violence against women. As preparations for the study continued throughout 2005, the International Indigenous Women's Forum (FIMI/IIWF) became increasingly concerned that the needs, rights, and perspectives of Indigenous women would not be adequately reflected in the study.

In response, FIMI developed a companion report to the Secretary-General's Study, exploring the many manifestations of violence against Indigenous women and recommeding strategies to combat it. The report was released at the United Nations on October 17, 2006.

FIMI's report, Mairin Iwanka Raya: Indigenous Women Stand against Violence, seeks to contribute to the development of a human rights discourse capable of generating concrete, effective strategies to combat violence against Indigenous women, and to bridge persistent gaps between the global women's movement and the international Indigenous movement by putting forward an Indigenous conception of gendered violence.

With a focus on the particular contexts that give rise to violence against Indigenous women, the report highlights promising practices in the areas of research, political mobilizations, and community-based civil society organizations and outlines further challenges to securing Indigenous women's right to a life free of violence.

Print copies of Mairin Iwanka Raya: Indigenous Women Stand against Violence are available for purchase ($12 plus cost of shipping). Please contact us at fimi@madre.org for more information.
