Women Dressed As Brides March Against Domestic
Violence | |
Hundreds of women dressed as brides took to the streets of Manhattan and the Bronx Tuesday to protest domestic violence. The sixth annual Brides' March was held in memory of a woman killed in 1999 by her ex-boyfriend on the day she was supposed to marry another man. Organizers say the six-mile march is just the first step in educating women that help is available. "We need to come into their homes and tell them we are here to protest domestic violence to let you know that there are federal laws, state laws and social service agencies that can help you get out of the cycle of violence," says march participant Josie Ashton. Organizers say NYPD officers responded to more than 226,000 domestic violence calls last year. They also say there is a growing trend of teen relationship abuse. |
