This briefing paper presents the latest figures on women's involvement
in decision-making at various levels on a global scale, including
parliamentary representation, local government and managerial posts. Some
of the key points are:
- quotas have played an important role in increasing female
representation in parliaments, especially in the Nordic countries
- there are currently 11 women head of state, and 2005 was a notable
year for women in politics. However, that is 11 leaders out of 193
countries
- 20 per cent of the counilors at local level are women
- countries in North America, South America and Eastern Europe have a
higher share of women in managerial jobs than countries in East Asia,
South Asia and the Middle East
- Cambodia has emerged from 30 years of conflict with the highest
female labour force of any country in the region
- in the Rwandan 2003 Parliamentary elections, women won 49 per cent
of seats in the lower house and 34 per cent in the upper house
