ERITREA - Religious leaders of the Anseba region called on all members of the society to condemn female circumcision, as it is not supported by any religion of the country. The disclosure by the religious leaders was made during a meeting held last week by the Ministry of Health in which over 100 religious leaders attended and discussed on issues as regards female circumcision and the effects it poses to females.

Noting that over 90% of females of the region pass through the blade of circumcision, health experts during the meeting discussed in details the society's awareness on the long-term effects of circumcision and the role of religious leaders in the prevention of the practice.

In depth discussions were also carried out by the religious leaders on issues as regards the aim of female circumcision, society's view on the subject and measures needed for the prevention of the practice.

Moreover, participants of the meeting established committees in all the sub-zones of the region with the aim of carrying out campaigns against the malpractice.

Noting that the traditional practice has an ill effect to females of any society, Dr. Hamed Mohamed Ali, branch head of the health ministry of the Anseba region further called on the religious leaders and residents of the various administrative districts to exert all efforts for the prevention of this ill-cultured practice.
