Dear Friends and Colleagues

We are pleased to send you, attached to this email, 3D's Report on Agricultural Trade Liberalization and Its Impact on Women's Rights in Niger

This report has been submitted to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, due to examine the situation of women in Niger in 2007.

This report describes how agricultural trade liberalization affects most sectors of the population in Niger, and how women suffer the most from adverse consequences of liberalization.

The report invites Niger to conduct an assessment of the impacts of planned liberalization policies on vulnerable groups, particularly on women, and to encourage public participation in the assessment.  The report suggests that Niger seek technical assistance to this end from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Last but not least, the report asks the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women to encourage Niger to remind its trading partners (particularly the European Union) and the International Financial Institutions that they cannot ask Niger to make commitments in the area of trade that would hinder its ability to respect human rights, particularly of women.

We hope you will find this report useful.

Sincerely,

The 3D team.
