Mama Cash supports women’s groups during the Middle East crisis
Deeply shocked by the war that has erupted in the Middle
East, Mama Cash has sent a letter of support to women’s groups that we have close
relationships with in Lebanon, Palestine and Israel. Mama Cash is extremely
concerned about the health and safety of civilians in the region and is
especially concern ed about the vulnerability of women and girls. In times of
conflict, women’s groups particularly need our support. In these situations, it
is frequently women who shoulder the responsibility for the family, and the
majority of refugees are women and children. Women and girls (and even babies)
are systematically and frequently raped during wartime.
Pressing need for financial
support
Mama Cash has asked women’s groups in
the affected countries how we can support their work in this disastrous
situation. To make sure that women’s groups can continue to devote themselves to
fighting for women’s rights and security, we are financing additional projects
in the Middle East.
For example, the women’s
organisation KAFA (Enough) Violence and Exploitation in Beirut has already
submitted an urgent funding application. Mama Cash is supporting this group so
that it can provide emergency help and supplies, but also so that it can
demonstrate strength and leadership as a women’s organisation by remaining an
active participant. KAFA coordinates its activities with other NGOs so that it
can offer help to women and children in war zones as quickly and effectively as
possible.
Mama Cash also wishes
to lend financial support to other women’s groups in the affected areas. Women’s
groups in southern Lebanon are very difficult to reach right now, and we are
using our network in the region to try to make contact with them.
