RESEARCH PROJECT ON
MUSIC TRADITIONS AND SOCIALLY MARGINALIZED WOMEN
Project title: "Voices
of Authority: Celebrating Womanhood Through
Communal Song"
Emily
Cogswell, a senior at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York seeks
research
contacts in the above countries for her proposed project for a
national
fellowship. She is interested in how creating music, and
particularly
vocal music, enables traditionally marginalized women to
reclaim authority
within their families and communities, whether it be
through private singing
practices, public performance, or disseminating
educational information
through song. She also wishes to explore how,
conversely, traditional
associations between musical expression and female
sexuality may have
resulted in exclusion of women from leadership
positions within certain
cultures and communities.
Please contact Emily at
emcogswell@vassar.edu with research
contacts,
suggestions, or information. Thank you.
