A Statement from the Board of Directors of the Global Fund for
Women
The Global Fund extends our solidarity
to the people of Lebanon, Palestine and Israel whose lives, safety
and wellbeing are being compromised by the current security and
humanitarian crisis. While the Global Fund does not conduct direct
relief efforts, we are actively awarding funds to grantees in the
region who are responding to the humanitarian crisis. We are
informing all affected grantees that they may use any moneys from
open grants to address the current situation.
It is our firm belief that all civilians touched by the crisis,
especially women and children who are disproportionately affected by
conflict, should be supported in this time of need. The Global Fund
is reaching out to grantees throughout the region in order to
bolster their efforts to provide necessary services and supplies,
and support their calls for peace.
Grantees Respond
-
The Global Fund has just awarded the Collective for Research
and Training on Development-Action (CRTD.A) a $15,000
grant in support of the group's efforts to help displaced families
in Lebanon. CRTD.A, which promotes gender equality and the
leadership of Arab women, is working with the Zicco Relief Centre
to secure basic supplies for women and children affected by the
conflict. Schools across the country, where thousands of Lebanese
families are taking refuge, are in need of hygienic supplies such
as sanitary napkins, which are often excluded from international
aid, as well as drinking water, diapers and soap.
-
The International Women's Commission (IWC),
comprised of Israeli and Palestinian women leaders, has called on
the international community to exercise its responsibility for the
protection of human security, human rights, and the fundamental
rights of all to live in an environment of peace and security. The
IWC is a joint initiative of Bat Shalom, an Israeli women's rights
group, and the Jerusalem Center for Women, a Palestinian women's
rights group, working to ensure that women are full participants
in all government and civil society efforts to build a sustainable
peace and eventual reconciliation in the Israeli/Palestinian
conflict.
- Helem, a
Lebanese group promoting the rights of sexual minorities and
women, work has shifted its center to a refugee intake point,
providing blankets, food, and other basic supplies for the
refugees from south Lebanon.
