The country's Family and Women Promotion minister, Cāndida Celeste, on Monday in Ondjiva, southern Cunene Province, said that Africa will only develop when the barriers against women are eliminated.

The minister made this statement on 31 July, during the central act part of Africa Women's Day celebrations, which was commemorated throughout the continent under the theme: "Peace, Security and Economic Stability in Africa".

According to Cāndida Celeste, the development of Africa will only be reached with the eradication or reduction of constraints that stop women's progress, relatating to the lack of access to economic resources, social basic services, elimination of high rate of illiteracy, HIV/AIDS pandemic and other infectious diseases.

She stressed that African women are also faced with the challenge of being more involved in the education of a culture of peace and reconciliation in families in the post-conflict periods in African societies.

According to the minister, with the consolidation of peace in Angola, a campaign is underway aimed at sensitising and discouraging gender violence, because the main victims are women and children.

Cāndida Celeste revealed at the occasion that her governmental department is continuing to work in partnership with other members and organisations of the civil society, to present a law on domestic violence.

The act was attended by governmental entities, officials from the Family and Women Promotion Ministry, Pan African Women's Organisation, NGOs, religious and traditional entities.
