New Focus Areas for AIDS
2006
As a new
feature of AIDS 2006, certain Conference sessions will focus on Key
Challenges in the response to HIV/AIDS. These sessions will use
special presentations, group discussions and other approaches to
highlight model programmes, discuss key barriers and their potential
solutions, facilitate the exchange of information, and acknowledge
countries and organizations that are successfully addressing these
issues.
Key Challenges in the Response to AIDS The Key
Challenge sessions will address issues that concern everyone
committed to the global response to AIDS. These sessions are an
opportunity to focus on critical barriers that must be addressed to
advance HIV research and service delivery. The goal is to marshal
the collective experience, knowledge and insights of Conference
delegates toward developing responses to these shared challenges.
The five key challenges for AIDS 2006, selected by the Conference
Organising Committee, are to:
Accelerate research to end the epidemic;
Expand and sustain human resources to scale-up prevention and
treatment;
Intensify involvement of affected communities;
Build new leadership to advance the response; and
Scaling Up: Lessons from the Field.
Expanded Youth Programme An expanded youth programme
will offer sessions organized by and for young people that will
explore issues of particular importance to this heavily affected
population. A new youth website (youth.aids2006.org) will
serve as a portal for youth-related programming during the
conference and will feature interactive reports written by youth
delegates.
